Why do you need a heavy bag stand, or heavy bag hanger?
The reason simple: Most heavy bags do not come with a stand or a proper hanger. Depending on where you plan on using it, if you require extra workout features, and how much money you want to spend, you can use either a heavy bag stand or a heavy bag hanger. The table below summarizes and reviews some of the most popular and top rated heavy bag stands and heavy bag hangers available online. Check out the additional info below the table as well! What to look for in a heavy bag stand or heavy bag hanger
Stand or Hanger?
Here are a couple things you will need to know and decide upon in order to find the best heavy bag stand or hanger:
1. Can your house, apartment, garage, or whatever, even support a heavy bag hanger? If you have nothing to hang a heavy bag from (e.g. no wooden beams), or are in a rental property where you know you probably shouldn’t be using a heavy bag hanger, that will cut down on your choices right away. I personally prefer hanging a bag if possible, as this allows you to focus on footwork more, but often times it just isn’t possible.
2. Footprint. Find out ahead of time how much space you have to accommodate a heavy bag workout. Picture yourself using the heavy bag as well and account for the space you will take up using the heavy bag. Then, if you find a heavy bag stand or hanger you like, find out the exact dimensions and see if it works for you. The last thing you want is to be pumped about a freshly ordered stand or hanger, and when it arrives you feel too cramped during your workout.
3. Extra costs. Let’s say you can accommodate both/either a heavy bag stand or a heavy bag hanger. If you’re leaning towards a stand, don’t forget that it may require some additional weight plates to keep it from moving when hitting it really hard. If you don’t have these items already, you may have to purchase them. The general rule of thumb for plates is that you will spend somewhere around a dollar per pound.
4. Noise. Remember that hitting the bag can be quite noisy, especially for those not participating in the workout and trying to watch TV in another room or something. You will be creating noise with either a stand or a hanger, but if you know that you want to limit noise in a certain room, that may affect whether or not you can even use a hanger.
Construction
Things you want to look for in a heavy bag stand include steel construction (usually high-guage steel construction), a powder coated finish for increased durability and rust-resistance, and the amount of weight it can support. Most heavy bag stands are very similar in construction and have these features, but if you come across one that doesn’t boast a powder coated finish or steel construction, it may be best to avoid that one.
Lastly, make sure you have everything you will need for assembly. The product description usually states whether or not all the necessary screws and other hardware is included (they should be). Assembly for heavy bag stands is usually pretty straight forward. Heavy bag hangers may require more improvisation and added components, but this will depend on what you have to hang it from. Often times you won’t know if you need to run out to the hardware store until you first try installing it, but generally speaking anything extra you need to buy shouldn’t be that expensive.
Added Features
If you’re trying to decide between multiple heavy bag stand or hangers and they are all around the same price point, try looking for any additional features. For example, some heavy bag stands also come with a speedbag swivel on the other side. Some heavy bag stands, like the XMark Deluxe Power Tower and Heavy Bag Stand, come with added features to help you with other exercises as well (e.g. dips, pullups, vertical knee raises, etc). Some heavy bag hangers have added benefits like ball bearing technology, albeit usually at a higher cost, but that’s something to look for, too.
Of course, if you are looking for a heavy bag stand or hanger you will want to focus your efforts on finding the most suitable product for you, and your goal is likely trying to find something that serves it’s primary purpose very well. We only recommend looking into extra features of heavy bag stands and hangers if you know you will use them and are having trouble deciding between products.
How to Hang a Heavy Bag

Hanging a heavy bag from scratch
This process will be a little easier with a purchased heavy bag hanger that already comes with a lot of the hardware. However, if you are a do-it-yourselfer and enjoy getting the ol’ mitts dirty, this is definitely a handy guide!
Hanging a Heavy Bag from a Concrete Ceiling
We’ve mentioned wood beams numerous times on this page, but in case you’re wondering, it is possible to hang a heavy bag from concrete as well. This video outlines the steps involved. Please be aware that it seems like the heavy bag they chose to hang is 80 lbs and they don’t mention if it ever fell down afterwards. If you are not confident doing this yourself, please find someone to help you or purchase something like a heavy bag stand that does not require the elbow grease and “home improvement”.
Heavy Bag Stands and Hangers – Individual Reviews
1. Everlast Heavy Bag Stand
Made in the USA, this is arguably the most popular heavy bag stand on the market. At a mid-range price point, what you see is what you get. Like most other decent heavy bag stands, the Everlast Heavy Bag Stand holds up to 100 lbs and includes three weight plate pegs for added stability and durability.
This following comment applies to most of these conventional style heavy bag stands: you will likely need some weights for the pegs. If you are a big person or just hitting the bag with lots of power, it’s likely the stand will move around a bit. This is expected, which is why they added the pegs for the weights. The only problem: the weights aren’t included.
If you have other exercise equipment at home there’s a chance you will have some plate-style weights. These are recommended, although I know some people who anchor with sandbags because that’s what they have in their garage. They can work well too, just not as well as plates.
Overall this stand has received good customer reviews. The main bonus is that it’s easy to put together, and although it may not be extremely “portable” when it is assembled, it’s something you can move around if you like by disassembling. If you don’t have the appropriate beams to hang a bag off, then this could be a good option. Mid range price, mid-range product that meets the requirements of most.
2. XMark Deluxe Power Tower and Heavy Bag Stand
At first when I saw this stand I thought “Oooohhhh fancy man needs a fancy stand”. But it actually can be fairly handy especially if you’re tight on space for extra workout equipment.
Along with the ability to hang a heavy bag, this stand allows you to comfortably perform vertical knee raises, pull-ups, dips, push-ups, etc. Moreover, the added odds and ends could allow you to design further custom exercises.
The customer reviews are all pretty solid. Mostly everyone says they are satisfied with the product and feel like like they got their money’s worth, but sometimes just barely. For the cost, you may expect more, but I guess that’s also a function of your own personal budget and what you intend to use the stand for.
In my opinion, there’s two ways to look at it: 1) If you’re on a tight budget and are only really concerned about hitting the bag, consider this thing gimmmiiccckkkyyyyyyy, but 2) If you have the expendable income and know you will use the added features, then this could be the right product for you. Clear as mud.
3. Everlast Wood Beam Heavy Bag Hanger
This is the ultimate classic. Just hang it from the ceiling! Actually, I prefer this method. Heavy bag stands generally limit your motion around the bag. Having a heavy bag hang from the ceiling gives you freedom to move around the entire bag. However, this is only possible if you are able to hang the heavy bag off the ceiling to begin with, and if you have the space to move around the heavy bag.
This heavy bag hanger can be used for single- or double-end heavy bags and is quite durable. It includes all the nuts and bolts you will need for installation as well. Some customers said they needed to use additional equipment for better installation but these are simple solutions like drilling pilot holes, using longer screws, buying a stud finder, buying a locking nut, etc.
Overall, if you have the space and aren’t afraid to get your hands a little dirty, this can be considered one of the best heavy bag hangers on the market, especially for the price.
4. Marathon Swing Hanger
The key component separating this heavy bag hanger from conventional hangers is the ball bearing technology. I love this aspect, as I’m a huge proponent of focusing on footwork while hitting the bag. One of the best ways is to adjust to the bags movements, and this thing constantly moves.
With a weight limit of 275 lbs, the Marathon Swing Heavy Bag Hanger is known for excellent quality and quiet, maintenance-free movement. The word “quiet” being underrated.
The main drawback is that some people find the installation a little confusing, but this price point and known quality, way she goes. If you have the infrastructure to support a hanging bag and the footwork that goes along with it, consider this heavy bag hanger a value play.
5. XMark Commercial Rated Heavy Bag Wall Mount XM-2832
The main thing this wall-mount style heavy bag hanger is known for is its heavy duty construction. The product description does not explicitly state the weight it will support, and I couldn’t find that information in the Owner’s Manual either. However, other customers have stated that it holds their 100 lb heavy bag without a problem, just make sure to follow the installation guidelines in the Owner’s Manual.
Overall, great quality product known for durability. If a wall mount heavy bag is what you’re after, this is highly recommended.
